The TomKitten has arrived!
Katie Holmes, 27, and Tom Cruise, 43, "joyously welcomed" their first child together on Tuesday morning at 3 am. The baby girl weighed in at 7 lbs, 7 oz, is 20 inches long, and was born at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, CA. She’s named Suri, which is Persian for ‘red rose’ or Hebrew for ‘princess.’ "Both mother and daughter are doing well," says a rep for the couple. People reports that Tom, Katie, and Suri are already back at home this evening.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!
April 18th, 2006 at 6:01 pm
What a strange coincidence that the Tomkitten is born on the same day that Cruise-maligned Brooke gives birth to her second child. How’s that for weird.
April 18th, 2006 at 6:06 pm
Awesome!! Can’t wait for the details! =) Hope the baby is healthy and Katie is okay.
Now all we have to wait for are pictures!! =)
April 18th, 2006 at 6:13 pm
I thought I felt a strange disturbance in the Force….
April 18th, 2006 at 6:21 pm
crzymaid, that is true! Ha! I can’t wait to hear what they named the baby. I still say it’s a boy.
April 18th, 2006 at 6:22 pm
My Excite page says that Cruise’s publicist has confirmed that the baby is a girl named Suri. E! is reporting the same news as well.
April 18th, 2006 at 6:24 pm
Well Suri is pretty
Where did she end up having the baby is what I want to know and did everything go smoothly? I assume mama and baby are well?
April 18th, 2006 at 6:31 pm
Hmmm. I expected the baby to be at least 9-10lbs. Congrats to the happy couple.
April 18th, 2006 at 6:44 pm
I really like the name Suri! In spite of the weirdness and the strangeness and the controversy, I genuinely hope that they are happy and I’m grateful that the baby is healthy! How exciting! I bet the two older kids will be a huge help with the baby! Can’t wait to hear the details…
April 18th, 2006 at 6:46 pm
I wonder how you pronounce the name. Sir-ee, or more like Sarah….I know Sarah has the meaning of princess in Hebrew also, which is the only reason it makes me wonder if it is pronounced more like the latter.
Either way, congratulations. I am glad she is here, and all the excitement can die down. Surprised me though…I thought everyone was pretty sure this one was a boy. Oh well. At least we got our little girl in the group of almost all boys this year.
April 18th, 2006 at 6:47 pm
Yay I’m glad more baby girls are being born! For awhile it seemed like there were so many baby boys.
Wow I can’t believe it’s over! The Hollywood Baby Boom is slowly ending with all the recent arrivals!
I thought the TomKitten would be a boy, but a girl is nice, and Suri is a pretii name.
I bet the Brangelina baby will be a boy!
April 18th, 2006 at 6:50 pm
Welcome to the world, Suri! =)
The name isn’t a fave of mine but I think it’s cute - I adore the meaning behind it. =)
Congrats to Tom & Katie - I’m sure they are beyond thrilled. =)
April 18th, 2006 at 7:02 pm
Shannon, I think it is a variation of Sara/h. I thought that as soon as I read that it meant princess in Hebrew, because my name does too!
April 18th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
Yes, finally.
Now, can we move on?!
April 18th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
A little ironic and funny that Tom and Brooke Shields’ sprouts share the same birthday.
April 18th, 2006 at 7:08 pm
finally! pretty name too. It will be nice not hearing about all the controversy anymore - i’m sure they are glad she is here too!
April 18th, 2006 at 7:19 pm
There’s another Shannon here now tooo!
Congrats to the couple - LOVE the name. It isnt too complex and unusual like many other celebrity names. I like it.
Now we just have to wait for the pics.
Wonder if the Cruise’s or Henchy’s will send gifts to each other???
April 18th, 2006 at 7:27 pm
Congrates.wonder if Brooke will send them a gift or vise versa..LOL
Suri is a beautiful name I hope the deleievery was SHHHHHHHHHHH quiet for her and she came easily and katie is well.
April 18th, 2006 at 7:29 pm
I just heard the full name is Suri Xenu L. Ronnette Holmes-Cruise. I’m not sure if it’s true or not …
April 18th, 2006 at 7:34 pm
Congrats to her (I don’t like him but whatever). I really don’t like the name though. It seems a little out there. Do you think Tom picked it? I wonder when they will release a photo? It seems like they would because Tom has been publicity driven lately and there is no reason to think he wouldn’t take advantage of making nice with fans and the tabs by releasing an offical photo.
It is kind of ironic that Brook had her daughter on the same day. Weird.
I really do wish them all the best. I bet Suri is a cutie.
April 18th, 2006 at 7:37 pm
^^ Amelie, I think Trent was joking about that being her full name. All they’ve said so far is that her name is Suri.
April 18th, 2006 at 7:37 pm
Beautiful name, I am so glad they FINALLY had the baby!!!! It is very ironic that Suri shares the same bday as Grier!! Congrats!!
April 18th, 2006 at 7:45 pm
Thank goodness the Xenu bit was a joke - it sounded a bit too ‘alien’ for me!
I can’t make myself like Suri though. It sounds too much like ’sewerage’
April 18th, 2006 at 8:04 pm
Suri doesn’t mean princess is Hebrew. Suri might be some kind of weird celebrity baby name variation of Sarah (much like Brandy’s daughter’s name is), but it still does not mean princess in Hebrew.
April 18th, 2006 at 8:22 pm
Ok so everyone knows: The name IS in fact Hebrew, and yes it does mean princess. It is an old family name of mine and when pronounced correctly, it should sound like Sir-ee. ALso loving the irony that he and Brooke both had their babies on the same day. Now let’s just hope that Katie doesn’t suffer from post partum or he’ll go absolutely overboard yet again!
April 18th, 2006 at 8:25 pm
wow after 13 months she finally gave birth to that damn pillow *smh*
just messing around. Congrats! I still feel sorry for this kid growing up with Tom as a daddy who wants to eat his daughters placenta *gags* but hopefully Katie will get smart and take care of her the right way!
I don’t think the name is that bad actually but I thought with Isabella and Connor it would have something like more common.
Well finally the long and I mean long wait is OVER! I thought it would be a boy but it’s nice to have a girl around. I still think Angelina and Gwen’s baby will be girls!
April 18th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
The placenta thing was a joke, if anyone actually believes it. LOL Although some people actually do eat it… ew.
April 18th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
I’m so happy for them both! i’m shocked, though! i could have sworn it would be a boy! anyway, i think the name is really beautiful! it’s so girly and perfect!
congratulations to the new parents!
April 18th, 2006 at 9:11 pm
I actually like the name - Suri. But Suri Cruise doesn’t sound good - it sounds like a cooking procedure or a type of yacht. Suri Holmes would sound better.
Wonder if it was a silent birth?
April 18th, 2006 at 9:11 pm
LOL to Joy’s comment…13 month pregnancy indeed!
April 18th, 2006 at 9:25 pm
He should be giving the placenta to Katie to eat - it can prevent new mothers from suffering from post natal depression.
Please remember that in some cultures it’s normal to eat the placenta - you might think it’s gross or disgusting, but to say so is extremely offensive to some people reading.
April 18th, 2006 at 10:04 pm
I find it very interesting that after all that work setting up that “hospital” in the house, she ended up delivering in a hospital. I guess the silent and drug free birth wasn’t possible. As for the name, sometimes it sounds cute (ex. sooree with r’s rolled), but not when it’s said Siree as in yessiree. Congrats to them and hopefully Katie won’t suffer from post partum.
April 18th, 2006 at 10:10 pm
I heard her name was Suri Gate (surrogate) - no, I’m totally kidding! Tom’s from Syracuse, NY, and if you say the name really fast, Suri Cruise, it almost sounds like Syracuse. On a serious note, I really do wonder what her full name is - hope Katie and baby Suri are healthy and happy!
April 18th, 2006 at 10:14 pm
You know, I was pretty sure Sari (not Suri) was the variation of Sarah that people are getting mixed up with. Suri (Indian last name or Persian first name) sounds like a variation of Surya if anything… It makes a lot more sense if sUri is a variation of sUrya, which is hindu and means sun. It’s really difficult to find books that will list sUri as a variation of Sarah. One is more likely to find sAri listed as such. It doesn’t matter anyway…I could very well be incorrect. It’s just a bit strange is all.
April 18th, 2006 at 10:19 pm
SURI is a variant form of SARAH which means PRINCESS or NOBLE in Hebrew. From the Aramaic SARAH means PRINCESS, GUARDIAN ANGEL, GENIUS (Jastrow, M. 1903. A Dictionary of the Talmud.v.2. Brooklyn: International Hebrew Book Inc. 1627).
Variant spelling - SURIE
Biblical name - SARAH was the wife of Abraham, and the mother of Isaac. She was the only woman in the Bible who laughed(Genesis 18:13; Genesis 11, 12, 16).
The letters featured in this painting are SHIN VAV RESH YUD. Taken together, they spell SURI.
Each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet has a special meaning and a story to tell. Here a few brief ones about the letters on this painting.
SHIN is the 21st letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of 300. SHIN means TOOTH, YEAR, REPEAT, TEACH. SHIN makes the sound SHHHHHH when the DAGESH - DOT is on the right, and SSSS when the DOT is on the left.
VAV is the 6th letter and has a numerical value of 6. It means HOOK and makes a sound like the V in Victory. When used as a vowel, VAV can sound like a long `o’ or a long `u.’ Translated it means AND. It is the GREAT CONNECTOR. VAV appears in the Four Letter name of God.
RESH is the 20th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of 200. RESH makes a sound like the R in Radiant. RESH means BEGINNING or HEAD. When one spells out the letter RESH in Hebrew, it is RESH YUD SHIN. YUD and SHIN spell YESH - THERE IS. The letter RESH means BEGINNING. So it is possible to say that the RESH literally means THERE IS A BEGINNING
YUD is the 10th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of 10. YUD makes a sound like the Y in Year. YUD is a simple point. It is the smallest letter in the alphabet and yet is frequently associated with the very large concept of EMANATION, the highest level in the Four World paradigm of Kabbalah.

Oh, I got that at hebrewbabynames.com
http://www.hebrewbabynames.com/item.cfm?itemid=758
April 18th, 2006 at 10:22 pm
Suri also means pickpocket in Japanese
April 18th, 2006 at 10:28 pm
Oh please amelie, save your polite PC-ness.
I thought for sure Katie would squeeze out a 10 pounder! She looked bigger than a house.
April 18th, 2006 at 10:47 pm
Polite pc-ness? How about get over it already and stop being so ethnocentric, and consider that there’s a world outside America before you go making a fool of yourself with ignorant comments. Is that better?
April 18th, 2006 at 10:48 pm
BTW E is reporting that Brooke and Katie not only gave birth on the same day, but in the same hospital, on the same floor.
April 18th, 2006 at 10:53 pm
Ha, Amelie, it is digusting. Just because *I* think it’s gross (infact, I’m vomiting in my mouth a little RIGHT NOW) doesn’t mean others can’t do it. Hey, whatever floats your boat. Infact, I’m going to open a Placenta restaurant next week! I don’t live in America, but I still have the right to say whatever I want.
Woooooo!
April 18th, 2006 at 10:55 pm
BTW I think Tom Cruise should eat Brooke Shields placenta instead.
April 18th, 2006 at 11:00 pm
I cant believe people are buying the placenta thing. Did any of you watch Diane Sawyer’s interview with him. or better yet read the original interview in GQ, he was joking and it was a clear joke too. The editor even states it as such and he was laughing about it on Primetime.
I swear people just want an excuse to bash the man these days, its getting a bit tedious.
Anyway congrats to Tom and katie on their new baby girl!
April 18th, 2006 at 11:03 pm
Yes, we know it’s a joke.
But we can’t even joke about it, cause you know, people might get OFFENDED. *gasp*
April 18th, 2006 at 11:15 pm
Layla’s Mommy,
lol you could have just given that small part, and the link.
I speak read and write Japanese…
April 18th, 2006 at 11:18 pm
Just to clarify - my second comment was tongue in cheek.
There’s a difference between offering your opinion, making a joke, and being rude. Obviously it’s beyond the capabilities of some people to realise that.
And yes I knew Tom was joking about the placenta - which is why I made the joke about Katie eating it instead
April 18th, 2006 at 11:38 pm
Thinking a little more deeply - this comment:
“But we can’t even joke about it, cause you know, people might get OFFENDED. *gasp*”
wouldn’t be taken so well if it was directed towards circumcision or breastfeeding (we’re not even allowed to talk about them, much less joke). I know eating a placenta isn’t quite the same as cutting half of your son’s penis skin off, but aren’t the rules made so people DON’T get offended? That’s my understanding of the ‘be nice’ rule, anyway.
April 18th, 2006 at 11:40 pm
I’m sorry it was so big. I thought of that after but you can’t edit here. Sorry. :$
April 18th, 2006 at 11:41 pm

eek, sorry for the double post - my computer froze as I was posting it.

A Suri is also a type of Alpaca.

April 19th, 2006 at 12:31 am
^ lol… i wonder if she’ll be as cute as a baby llama! those things are adorable!!
April 19th, 2006 at 1:11 am
Wow, I am VERY surprised! I was thinking she was having a boy! She was sooooooooooo big! My mom was just saying, “That is EXACTLY how I carried my boys!” when we saw her on ET yesterday…I am surprised! I actually like the name Suri-I think it is different and pretty. Suri Cruise sounds like a type of Hawaiian cruise line though. I do feel somewhat bad for Tom lately. Just because he is outspoken on scientology and his love life doesn’t make him a crazy lunatic. I think he actually seems like a pretty nice guy, just dont upset him about his religious beliefs and you should be fine. haha. Anyways, Congrats to them! I am very happy that the baby girls are finally arriving after a year chock full of baby boys. I am crossing my fingers and hoping Angelina has a girl too!
April 19th, 2006 at 1:43 am
A girl named Suri for TomKat. Okay, TomKitten’s name is Suri, lmao. Anyway, I was surprised by the name they gave her, when I saw it scroll across the screen during E! News.
It’s different, I know that.
Hope Suri and Kate are doing well. I heard they were.
April 19th, 2006 at 1:55 am
Personally, regardless of if it may be the norm elsewhere in the world, I think the thought of eating the placenta is beyond gross! I don’t think it makes me, or anyone else for that matter, ignorant or lacking in PC-ness if we don’t like the idea…One of the things I enjoy about this blog is that we can discuss things and offer up our differing opinions. It becomes less fun when we start name calling and getting upset with each other. Just my 2 cents!
April 19th, 2006 at 2:37 am
Congratulations to the happy couple and welcome to baby Suri !
I hope everybody is healthy and that Katie is fine !
About Suri…it’s like…I mean..I’m french and in french if you pronounce SURI (souris) it means mouse..like mickey mouse!
Anyway, I really love them together (am I the only one? ) and am so happy for them !
April 19th, 2006 at 6:01 am
tinkerbell, not only did that very thought occur to me (souris) because my mother is French, but my father is Iranian (Persian)
and not only would Suri have to be pronounced Soo-ree in English to approximate the Persian pronunciation which is the equivalent of the French mouse but neither my father nor my grandmother have ever heard of it meaning “red rose”. Soor in Farsi means red in relation to the name of the night before the Persian New Year, but no one we asked has ever heard of Suri meaning “red rose”. I wonder where they got that?
April 19th, 2006 at 6:06 am
Isn’t Tom’s real last name Mapother? So therefore she would be Suri Mapother, not Suri Cruise?
April 19th, 2006 at 6:54 am
That’s cool that the baby was finally ‘born’, at least as far as the public knows now.
I thought it was going to be a girl after I read somewhere that someone briefly interviewed Tom in passing, asking him about babysitting, and he said “Oh yeah you can take her anytime, just ask…oops” (imho it sounded like the comment from an exasperated father of a newborn, not an unborn child at the time.)
Suri is an interesting name, somewhat Indian but interesting nonetheless.
April 19th, 2006 at 7:42 am
After coming to this site for A LONG time, I finally downloaded Mozilla Firefox and can now post comments!!
Congrats to Katie, Tom and Suri! Loving the name and wish them the best…..!
April 19th, 2006 at 9:17 am
I can’t wait to see some photos, I really like the name too!
April 19th, 2006 at 9:36 am
meliciousgirl:
Don’t quote me on this, but I think Tom legally changed his name to Cruise. Not 100% certain though, but I think that’s what I read somewhere.
April 19th, 2006 at 11:24 am
I wonder where Tom found the baby!!
again, I can’t stop with the jokes! No but seriously I am so happy the kid is here and now maybe we won’t see them for awhile and the whole Tomkat thing will die down. I don’t know I feel more excited still for the bradgelina baby. I can’t wait to see photos! Maybe they’ll have playdates with Brooke’s baby….I still find it so wierd that they had their babies the same day!
April 19th, 2006 at 11:42 am
Erin:
your right:
Name at birth: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV
he was born July 3 1962
Hope that helps..:)
April 19th, 2006 at 12:16 pm
CONGRATS TO TOM AND KATIE! WELCOME BABY SURI! LOVE THEM!
____________________________________________
PEOPLE updated their website and here’s some new information:
Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise’s Baby: A ‘Blue-Eyed Beauty’
The birth went so smoothly that Holmes left the hospital within 24 hours. Holmes, Cruise and baby Suri are back home now and doing well.
Suri “has lots and lots of dark hair and big, blue eyes,” says a source close to Holmes’s family. “She’s going to be a beautiful baby.”
_____________________________________________
I am very very happy for them!!!!!!!
April 19th, 2006 at 1:34 pm
It’s a pretty name, but it’s just as bad as any other celebrity name. Does NO one in Hollywood ever think about the whole combo? Suri Cruise sounds like a vacation getway. I just hope she has a middle name that breaks it up nicely. *sigh*.
April 19th, 2006 at 1:58 pm
I may be the only one who noticed this but her name is Suri and Suriname is the name of a country in South America. Strange.
It’s a pretty name, it just sounds strange next to Connor and Isabella.
April 19th, 2006 at 5:21 pm
Suri Cruise - puts that “Sea Cruise” song in my head… Congrats and best of luck to them anyway.
April 20th, 2006 at 9:38 am
it seems that SURI in japanese also means..pickpocket
Anyway..
April 21st, 2006 at 1:13 pm
Congrads!!
Of Course Tom’s daughter needed to up one over grier .
Next big baby Brangalina .
Does Tom’s other kids have the Cruise last name or his real last name?
May 9th, 2006 at 8:49 pm
tom’s other children also have the last name “cruise”. tom legally had “maypother” DROPPED when he was 20 or so. his last name has been Cruise since then.
June 29th, 2006 at 7:17 am
according to three baby name books I have they all say the same: Suri (todas bot hebrew) means pointy nose not princess as that is what Sarah means and Suri is not a form of sarah at all.
source: The Very Best Baby Name book in the whole wide world by Bruce Lansky
This guy knows what he is talking about he has written several baby name books over the years and I have his latest edition
