Nicole Richie and Joel Madden confirm pregnancy
As CBB readers learned exclusively on June 17th, reality star and celebrity baby Nicole Richie, 25, and rocker Joel Madden, 28, are expecting their first child. They confirm the news, as we also exclusively told you last week, during Nicole’s interview with Diane Sawyer airing Thursday and Friday. Nicole told Diane,
Yes I am. We are. I’m almost four months.
We hear she’s currently around 17 weeks. Of finding out she was pregnant, she says,
I didn’t believe it. It was my best friend and I, and wewere at her house. And she was like, ‘You’re definitely pregnant.

I will confess that I was startled and skeptical when I heard the news. However, I am aware that the Nicole Ritchie we see on TV may not be the real Nicole Ritchie. Here is hope that she maintains responsibility and stays healthy.
And it is not up to me (or anyone for that matter) to judge how fit of a parent she will be based purely on her public persona.

I am glad she views the DUI seriously or at least seems to. Lets hope taking responsibility will help her. Four days in jail is not much, but hopefully it will be all that she will need. Since she has been with Joel I think she has settled down a bit. Now, with a baby on the way maybe she has grown up!! I have never been a fan of Nicole and Joel and Hillary’s breakup rubbed me the wrong way (on his part), but I wish them a healthy pregnancy and beautiful baby. All the best!

I feel bad for Hilary. She was with him for 2 1/2 of her young life and they break up and a week later he’s with someone else and has already knocked her up.

Congrats to Nicole and Joel. Aside from what everyone who will nit pick at every freakin’ thing she does, she deserves happiness just like everyone else in the world. When my brother who racked up 3 DUI’s before his 21st birthday, we thought he was a lost cause. However once he became a father that made him grow up real fast. I’m sure the same will happen with Nicole. Again congrats to them both, no doubt that baby will be gorgeous!

I didn’t believe she was & I was hoping she wasn’t. I can only wonder what they were thinking. I hope this opportunity will make her turn her life around. And she hasn’t been dating Joel Madden for very long. I wonder why she wouldn’t have a baby with the man she was with for over 3 years. I’m sorry to be pessimistic but I do not see them staying together or this situation working out very well.

DUI is a serious offense. She is lucky she harmed no one. I am not optimistic she will do time, either.

While I did think she was pregnant, it still surprises me for some reason that she is. I don’t know…this will be an interesting interview and interesting to see the two of them in the months leading up to and after the birth. It just seems like Nicole is a rebound from Hilary…hopefully not though. Either way, wish them the best of luck and congrats!

I also felt sorry for Hilary Duff, because she was with Joel for so long and then he dates and knocks up Nicole not too long after breaking up with Hilary. It’s kinda sad that he would move on so fast.
I was hoping that Nicole wasn’t pregnant also, but too late now. I’m glad that she has to serve jail time. I hope that will wake her up from what a stupid act she did back in December. Hope their baby will be okay.

Quite honestly, I’m surprised she could even GET pregnant! She’s so incredibly thin, I’m shocked she was able to get her periods and ovulate and everything! Since she’s preggers, she HAS to eat or the unborn baby will not grow. Congrats to them…

I do not feel bad for Hilary at all. Hilary is what? 19? I couldn’t imagine her wanting to be pregnant or wanting to start a family soon. I always thought that she was in a “too serious” relationship for her age at the time she dated Joel. I have nothing against dating older man, I am married to someone 7 years my senior, but maybe Joel and her were not in the same place in life.
As far as Nicole, I hope she is staying healthy for her baby and herself.

yikes. may God protect this child. have any of you even watched her show, the simple life?? i don’t think her persona on that show was ever an act. oh well. she’ll end up doing what everyone else in Hollywood does anyway. Hire a nanny and for go parental responsibilty. she’ll be back to her hard partying days in no time. good luck to that kid!

The fact that Nicole did get pregnant seems to prove that she is simply a very tiny person - not anorexic. She’s been saying that all along.
I’m happy for her and think this baby will change her life for the better. I hear that “Simple Life” has been cancelled.
Maybe Nicole can do a reality show with Joel and the baby. She has such a big personality, it would be fun to watch.

actually, just for informational purposes, a person can have an eating disorder and get pregnant. the technical definition of anorexia says that a woman must have stopped menstruating, but there are cases where a woman can get pregnant w/o having a period. also, some anorexic women never stop having their period and, even though they don’t have the technical definition of anorexia, they are still very, very sick.
i am NOT NOT NOT saying that nicole has an eating disorder. i just wanted to clarify from what zoom5 said.

I have a hard time believing she’s 17 weeks if she is quoted as saying she’s, “Almost 4 months.” Wouldn’t that make her 13-15 weeks?
I’m not a Nicole Richie fan. I’m not a Joel Madden fan.
Sarah’s note: Our source (who you guys can now see has been right so far) tells us she’s due in mid-January. Perhaps she just wants the press to think she’s due later than she is so that people aren’t hounding her about a due date a la Bridget Moynahan.

I heard and of course this is under the rumor mill that Hillary wanted to remain a virgin and Joel was not happy about it and that’s why he moved on. Now I agree, I think he was too old for her and wanted more and has a right to move on. However, I just hope if the rumors are true that he didn’t try to force Hillary to do something she didn’t want to do. And I hope he didn’t just hop into bed w/ Nicole because he one was looking for someone to sleep with as well as get pregnant!
Out of all the crazy celebs out there I have high hopes for Nicole to be an awesome mom and to straighten herself out. I wish her well. I just hope she doesn’t ask BFF Paris to be godmother *rolls eyes*

I admit, when I hear stories like this and the couples hasn’t been together long, It makes me wonder why celebs seem to not know anything about protection to prevent unplanned surprises.I’m not saying they will be bad parents but I don’t think they have even been together for two years and now they will be connected for the rest of their lives.

I am happy for them! I really think that its going to be a great thing for her to become a mother. Some people need something like that to become a responsible adult and thats exactly what it looks like is happening! Unlike so many in hollywood it really does look like she has grown up and is learning from her mistakes (mistake being the DUI not the baby). They seem like they will make loving parents!

I said in the last post about her that I honestly believe she’s beginning to mature as a result of this pregnancy and relationship, and this reinforces my original thought. I wish her and Joel the best, and I hope they have a healthy baby and the best life possible.
As for Hilary Duff, she’s 19 and he’s…..not. Surely it wasn’t expected to last past a certain point. They’ve broken up and been apart for months now so she should be over him or well on her way.

I seriously can’t believe she was able to get pregnant. I still think she is irresponsible, and immature and worry about what kind of mother she will be. I just don’t get all of these celebrities who are together for a short period of time and feel the need to get knocked up. A baby is not an accessory!!!

I never thought Joel and Hilary would last. She is too young to get married and raise a family. That said, I feel horrible for her. She moved on from the break-up in a classy way. She didn’t party, didn’t drink, etc, and he goes and gets some girl he’s been dating since earlier in the year pregnant.
I am not one of those crazed Hilary fans, but if you ask me, she would make a better mom than Nicole. I don’t think someone with a DUI would make a responsible parent-I’m sorry, but that is my two cents. If you cannot even take care of yourself, how can you take care of a small child.

regarding the 17 weeks/four months issue… having been 17 weeks ten weeks ago - the first trimester is over at 14 weeks. not 12. when you start your 18th week then you will be four months pregnant.

I too wondered how Nicole, being so thin, could get pregnant. I find it hard to believe she was ovulating on her own. She was photographed at a fertility clinic, though, so I wonder if she had help (intentional or not)?

i have never really been a fan of nicoles but congrats to her and joel.
the idea of a liitle skinnky as punk baby boy and a white as punk n primped baby girl seems odd. i will never get the idea that this child is likely to be as ugly as joel until i see photos after the birth.

All this week/month is very confusing for everyone. For example, I’m due 16 Dec 2007, so today I’m 20w3d or I’m in my 21st week or 4 months pregnant (completed months) ie I’m at the beginning of the 5th month.

Whether or not you think she was too young for the relationship or not, doesn’t mean people shouldn’t feel for her. Because she wasn’t ready to get pregnant or get married, we shouldn’t have any feelings for her? People still have feelings when they’re young, you know. I certainly don’t believe this baby was planned either.
I think the break-up was the best thing for Hilary. IMO she is better off without him. She broke up with him, after two years, and took time to grieve the relationship. He just jumped straight in with Nicole and bam, pregnant. Not only that, he is out and about in the public eye all the time. Without a doubt I’m sure that whether it is the best thing for Hilary or not, it is still going to hurt. They were in a relationship for more than two years, and he always wanted to stay out of the public eye and rarely would go out with her, he preferred to stay in. All of a sudden he’s dating Nicole and out all the time. Hilary’s much better off without him. She’s maintained her dignity and admits despite him hurting her, she wishes them all the best.
Despite all that, I’ve never liked Joel very much, but I don’t mind Nicole. I hope they stay together for the sake of their family but I do think he jumped in too quick and I fear that he will wake up and realise that someday. I hope this means she will stay healthy.

I knew she was pregnant because on the simple life she was eating alot of the time her and paris were always in the kitchen and she would always be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwhich. But I am happy I know that this baby will mature her and Paris alot and Joel I think it will make them think twice before doing something like drinking and driving. These girls are role models for our little girls and they need to clean up there image.

I happened to see an old rerun of the Simple Life, which I have never seen before. I was absolutely turned off by the foul-mouthed, disrespectful, rude Nichole Richie. I really hope that was an on-tv persona only. If so, I doubt she is ready for the responsibility of a child. I hope I am proved wrong and she becomes an outstanding mother.

Principesa, Nicole IS going to jail. No two ways about it. If she doesn’t, then she’d be back in court and would have to serve more time for violating her parole.
I’m happy for Nicole and Joel. Nicole was with Adam for like 3 years and didn’t get pregnant, so obviously she knows how not to get pregnant. I don’t think it’s that far of a stretch to think that maybe she actually wanted to get pregnant. If not that, things happen. Nicole seems to be maturing and this will probably do wonders for her.

I don’t believe she was naturalyy tiny. When she was first starring with Paris on the show she was 25 punds heavier than she had been in her skinny photos There was nothing natural about her thinness. These stars are doing cocaine and one by one they are getting busted.
How on earth do you think all the models get so thin? No one is naturally under 100 pounds… Wake up people!

I know that Nicole plays a part on her “reality” show, and so I hope that she really is as mature as she sometimes appears to be.
As for Hilary, I’m really glad that she and Joel didn’t stay together because this could have been her in this situation. She is so young and this would have ruined her; whereas Nicole is older and does not have the kind of work load Hilary does.
I wish all four of them (Hilary, Joel, Nicole and the baby) much happiness for a better future!

Nicole was sentenced to four days in jail, and has to complete it some time before September. I also heard that this baby was planned, and she and Joel wanted to have kids and they deceided that now was a good time. I just hope she has matured for the baby, and I hope they are good parents, she does seem to already be getting better so that’s a good sign. Happy pregnancy!

One of the things that struck me about Nicole on the first season of The Simple Life (the only season I watched) was how utterly inconsiderate she was about other people’s time and property. That really, really bugged me.
Yet she is a tough one to figure out, because I also adore the serene and lovely smile she is always photographed with. She always seems to be the most peaceful young person out there. Her appearance seems to belie her experience. I just don’t know what to make of it.
I hope she and Joel are determined to clean up their act for their baby, and I wish them the best of luck.

I have to chime in on her “almost 4 months pregnant” remark. That is exactly right if she is 17 weeks. Since a month is longer than just four weeks, at 17 weeks you are actually 3.9 months pregnant… almost 4 months, just like she said!

I worry about people who seem immature and then end up getting pregnant, so people say they hope the baby will make the parents mature. I am 22 years old, people tell me I’m mature for my age, but I know I’m not ready to be a parent. I can’t imagine people who are known to be immature being ready to be parents. Plus, I babysit a lot (its my main source of income until I find a job in my industry). Parents don’t know how to be parents much anymore. They want to be their kids’ friend, don’t understand discipline, manners, etc. Babies shouldn’t make parents ready, parents should be ready for the baby. For Nicole to have possibly planned this pregnancy at this time in her life, when she is still struggling with weight issues (as her dad has confirmed within at least the last year), having legal troubles for DUI and drugs, and knowing that she could be going to jail, it makes me question her readiness and really makes me worried.

Kaitlyn- I must respectfully disagree. As other posters have mentioned on other recent Nicole threads, there are plenty of Celeb moms that pregnancy/adoption did seem to change. For example, the adoption of Maddox seemed to make Angelina Jolie change for the better. She had been a “wild child”, but once she became a mom, she seemed to become more mature and really clean up her act.
Also, I have read, like a previous poster mentioned, that Nicole and Joel planned this pregnancy because they thought that “now would be a good time to have kids”. Therefore, I am sure they feel ready for kids.

You know, sometimes you just want to ask why? My hubby and I have been dealing with secondary infertility for 3 years now. I just want to know why some women can get pregnant so easily and others can’t. Here is a girl who gets multiple DUI’s, has a history of drug and alcohol use and gets pregnant like the drop of a hat! Please no bashing here. I truly hope that this will straighten her out and that she will be a great mom. It just makes people like me so upset when you see something like this happen. I am a good person who obeys the law and I love being a stay at home mom to our 3 year old daughter. Why can’t I get pregnant?
