Anthony Kiedis opens up about new son Everly Bear

Tags: Baby talk , Dads , Names , News , Quotes

Anthony_keidis_heather_christieRed Hot Chili Pepper frontman, Anthony Kiedis, 44, and girlfriend, model Heather Christie, 22, welcomed new son Everly Bear to the world last Tuesday, October 2. Anthony talked to People on Saturday at a fundraiser for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in LA and explained that Everly's name was musically inspired. Anthony said:

We had a long list of names, but suppose it came to me by way of the Everly Brothers, which is one of my favorite bands. And sometimes last names make good first names.

Anthony explained that Heather helped choose the second part of Everly's name - 'bear'. He said:

The mama came up with Bear. That made sense to me because he's from me and I feel like I'm part of the bear clan, and I think it's nice to have a little bit of earth in your name.

Anthony commented on new fatherhood as well, saying:

Being a father is different, it's much different. I sleep when I can, but he's letting me off pretty easy so far. He's a very calm and peaceful kid.

BEAR? Wow...

Although I don't like the name Bear, I simply love the name Everly, and he's right sometimes last names make great first names, see Jackson for example.
I can't wait to see that baby.

As a personal name advisor, I have to disagree. Surnames rarely (if ever) make attractive first names. *sigh* When will people learn?!

Posted by: Candice at Oct 14, 2007 8:40:27 PM

I love Anthony but BEAR?!

I realise its his second name, but next its going to be lychee or octopus?! Its getting progressively worse!!!

Do they not think when they grow up into teenagers at school they might be a bit humiliated?!

On a positive note, I like the name Everly :)

i have to disagree with everyone. I love surnames as first names. Its a nice way to incorporate a family name without using something so common. Think of how many Connors or carters or harrisons are out there these days! Everly is nothing different.

As for bear, haha i actually knew a boy names bear! I think it was his nickname but all hed ever been called by family, teachers, friends was bear! I thought it was cute :)

That's their kid and they have the right o name him whatever they want.I like the name...it's unique and that can be a good thing nowadays. Too many people pick that same name over and over again

Posted by: Renee at Oct 14, 2007 9:47:50 PM

I LOVE both names!!!!!!

Posted by: michelle at Oct 14, 2007 10:19:51 PM

Awesome name. Middle names rarely matter in school or when they get older, so who cares what the kid's middle name is?

Posted by: Rebecca at Oct 14, 2007 10:39:23 PM

I really like last names as first names. While some sound pretentious, most are great and work for a newborn as easily as they work for an adult. I always think of my kids' names followed by CEO before we use the name.

Wow.. interesting names! I think it's nice to name your child something that's a little different and not too common, but there are so many kids nowdays whose names I can't pronounce if I saw it in writing first. I know that has to get frustrating for some kids when they get older constantly having to correct people or explain why they have such a crazy name. JMO.

Candice,

You mention that you are a personal name advisor. What is that, exactly? Just curious!

Posted by: ashley at Oct 15, 2007 12:37:41 AM

I love the name Everly! It has a very interesting sound to it. However, I don't know about Bear.............

Posted by: Victoria at Oct 15, 2007 3:31:58 AM

what on earth is a 'personal name advisor'???!!
not a huge fan of everly - sounds like beverley which is a girl's name. I'm also in agreement that last names should be last names!!

Posted by: freya at Oct 15, 2007 5:08:28 AM

I'm sure he had his reasons. My confusion is from his comment, "I feel like I am part of the bear clan..." What on earth does that mean?

Colleen, I agree, I think it's a great idea to think about your child as not only a baby but a to-be adult as well.

Different and likable names. How is Bear and different from Apple?... Earthy indeed. Congrats.

Posted by: Campbell at Oct 15, 2007 7:16:30 AM

This man is proud of his Native American heritage - I can't believe some people are ridiculing the name Bear. It is extremely significant for him, obviously. Would you be so rude if a Jewish, Buddhist or Muslim person chose a name you thought was strange?

Posted by: amelie at Oct 15, 2007 7:29:31 AM

they called him and anthony said it was a part of him because anthony is half native american blood which he discovered when researching his family history for his autobiography scartissue

Posted by: ally12 at Oct 15, 2007 7:55:48 AM

I love both names, especially together, they work together.

Oh, and who in the world needs a personal name advisor? People actually pay for that? Seems ridiculous to me, "advising" people as to which name is right for their kid. Those kids are going to come back and sue later in life when they find this out, haha. Like I said though, to each their own.

Posted by: MMM at Oct 15, 2007 10:24:32 AM

I like Everly, and I think Bear is cute, but when he is older, he can always shorten to Everly B. That is what my dad did because he did not like his middle name.

Posted by: Shan at Oct 15, 2007 11:11:57 AM

cool name....i love the 'bear' bit, i have a son called 'Roman Wolf'

Posted by: Rhian at Oct 15, 2007 12:44:45 PM

I work on a volunteer basis for Baby Names World (the link on my name in this comment will take you there) helping parents-to-be decide on a name for their new baby (whether that involves simply looking over their list and telling them what works or completely starting from scratch, offering names tailored specifically to their likes and dislikes). I know it may seem strange, but the demand for this service (which is completely free at Baby Names World, MMM) has grown 75% in the past year.

Hope that answers your question, Ashley and Freya!

Posted by: Candice at Oct 15, 2007 1:53:20 PM

Rhian, I like that name. It's unique but not overboard. I still like Everly Bear...it's unique and a strong name. I wish people wouldn't act like it's the worst name outthere. I have heard worse...from nonfamous people at that but again, their kid so they have earned the right to name them whatever they want to.

Posted by: Renee at Oct 15, 2007 2:07:37 PM

I have a 16 month old daughter named Everly so I happen to think the name is simply beautiful. She has 3 older brothers who are affectionately called The Everly Brothers. :)

I think Bear is beautiful and a great homage to his Native American roots - we went with the middle name of Fern, after my beloved grandmother.

Posted by: Marissa at Oct 15, 2007 2:12:20 PM

I think the name sound great - I really like the name Everly and ive heard people give there children much much worse second name
and i doubt people make fun of him because of his name, his dads a rock star and his mums a supermodel

Posted by: Sammy-xx at Oct 15, 2007 2:32:11 PM

I like the name Everly, it sounds like a name for sweet person :)

What do you think they'll use for short? Evi or Eve is not really for a boy.

Posted by: Sarita at Oct 15, 2007 4:22:53 PM

Naming a child is a personal thing. You choose the names for your children for your own reasons. I recall when Frank Zappa was asked why he picked such "odd" names for his children he said something like "consider the beauty of the name Ralph." Which I think is hilarious.
Anthony Kiedis seems to me to be an unusual, funky, poetic sort of man. His child is bound to be part of a world full of artists, musicians and free spirits - to whom it wouldn't matter if his name was Everly Bear or John David or Winston or Jamal or Abraham or whatever.... A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
