Steal That Look, Forty Weeks Style: Jennifer Lopez's Waiting for Baby (and oh so glam) Blues

Tags: Celeb Style

Forty Weeks Julia Beck by Julia Beck, of Forty Weeks

Jenniferlopez40weeksstyle Jennifer Lopez is a girl after my own heart! I have pictures of myself just days before Samuel was born as glam as I could manage (not at Fashion Week, but rather dining at Galileo in Washington, DC) and dressed in blue linen. Let’s call it the Waiting for Baby Blues!  Major kudos to Jennifer Lopez for pulling off  this stunning look with such sophistication and savvy.  And for making it to Bryant Park as well! Jennifer is flawless from head to toe (and how I adore those shoes - but how ever did she manage?). She looks fantastic –- her skin is radiant, her hair lush and her dress divine.

Even in hard to pull off Satin, the dress really works -- the hue is beyond flattering and the details (how fantastic is that jeweled neckline next to her gorgeous face?) including the cap, bubble sleeve are well suited for this super chic look.  'Tis true!

Here is what to keep in mind when stealing Jennifer Lopez’s "Blues" look Forty Weeks Style:

*Blue is an easy to incorporate hue that also packs a fashion punch. Wear blue as a rich monochromatic statement or use it as a separate to add pop.
*Look for high sheen satins to take blue into evening and blue-infused ethnic prints and fabrics to make a high-impact daytime statement.
*Choose your blue based on your skin and hair color. Work to complement, not overpower with color. *Don’t be afraid to experiment with rich new hues of teal, cobalt and Indigo that are abundant this season.
*When you get blue, do it right – insist on the right fit and cut to flatter your curves.

Nombordertrimdress Steal That Look Forty Weeks Style - Waiting for Baby Blues
Nom’s Border Trim Dress (right, $136) is navy blue with a little kick! The bold red border defines the empire waist, split tie back and split front bodice for a very complimentary cut. The gentle dolman banded sleeve and easy rounded neck-line make this one easy to wear and sure to draw many complements! Consider a great red or black patent shoe with some good height and classic lines to finish this one off to perfection. (Save 15% with code CBB)

Shirredwaisttunic This vibrant, indigo, Shirred Waist Tunic from Mimi Maternity (left, $29.99 on sale) shows off sexy shoulders and drapes thanks to a shirred tie waist. Side bust gathers help to ensure a great fit. Accessorize this from basic to belly-fabulous with accessories –- an arm full of crystal bangles and chandelier earrings would certainly do the trick.

Isabellaoliverruchedtankdress The sleek look and perfect fit of this Isabella Oliver Ruched Tank Dress (right, $175) makes it a great pick in sassy, cobalt blue. The dress has built in support and also straps wide enough to accommodate a bra if needed as well as a deep scoop neck to help really show off your pregnant form! The clean profile of this dress make it an easy one to dress –up to the max or keep mellow  -- just choose your accessories to meet your mood!

Lizlangewovensmock_2 The Liz Lange for Target Woven Smock in Turquoise (left, $20) is an easy to wear way to get the blues. The top is made of cotton and features a square neck and scoop back making it anything other than standard issue. This top leans more towards a boho chic look, which can be accomplished easily and with style! Try some silver metals and earth-toned gems in the form of long earrings or necklaces.

Duekimonotop I have become a huge fan of this top! The Due Kimono Maternity Top in Teal (right, $54 on sale) is made of a comfortable (and easy to care for) Rayon and Spandex blend. This empire waist, cross-over top (also available in chocolate, black and ruby) dresses up or down and fits to flatter. (Save 15% with code CBB)

Your Comments

While I know you won't post this, please do not encourage pregnant women to wear this sort of footwear. It is not safe. It is not safe. Is it worth the chance that an ankle can turn, and you fall on your behind? Even if your babies remain safe, do you want to deliver while all bruised up? Or, worse, with a broken ankle. Think about it. Vanity has no place in pregnancy. Sure, you can look great. But, you can look great without heels like that. Please remember, many young mothers look to YOU, for guidence. Take this seriously. I enjoy your site, but I am disappointed you would applaud this footwear. Thank you. Mary..aka brookefan.

Note from Danielle, CBB Publisher: I really have no idea what you're talking about. All Julia said was "Jennifer is flawless from head to toe (and how I adore those shoes - but how ever did she manage?)" which I do not interpret as encouraging pregnant women to wear stilettos. Her column focuses solely on Jennifer's dress.

In any case, while readers may look to us for guidance, they're not idiots. I believe that our readers know themselves well enough to know whether they can handle wearing high heels. I have never been able to wear shoes with more than a 2" heel so during my pregnancy, I used my judgment and limited when I wore then.

I would like to point out though that high heels are not forbidden during pregnancy, they alter your posture and your center of gravity is already off, along with loosened ligaments. Since you're more likely to develop a backache from wearing them and lose your balance, it's best to limit wearing them to special occasions.

Additionally, we asked Robin Elise Weiss, About.com's Pregnancy Guide, about wearing high heels in pregnancy. She told us,
"I saw that picture and thought "Ouch!" Heels in pregnancy are usually discouraged in pregnancy because of being off balance, leg pain, leg cramps, etc. Late in pregnancy, particularly in a twin pregnancy, I'm not sure how you could do it! My guess, from reading someplace that she was complaining of her feet swelling and she was out buying comfortable shoes, is that this was a one off event for a very big deal and not something she does all the time. You can bet Marc was rubbing her tootsies that night!

I just bought the Mimi Maternity tunic for a work function my hubby has coming up. Thank you!

As for the heels issue, I work at a law firm and wear 2-3" heels daily, but I know my limits. They come off when I'm at my desk, and I wear flats on the weekends.
