Father's Day Gift Guide: For the gadget lover
Yes, it's a cliche but men love gadgets. It's a left brain/right brain, Mars/Venus thing, so why deny it? Make dad or grandpa happy with a gadget that he will make his life easier or at least give him a new toy to play with. Most of these items are pricey, we'll admit, but we also made sure to include items under $100.

Well, what I REALLY got my husband was a private golf lesson at a local course. What he says he would have also liked was the SportsCast Wireless Football Scoreboard.
My husband and his brother live on opposite coasts, but each year
they're in the same fantasy football league and to say there is a
sibling rivalry between them is an understatement. It gets heated!
Because he can't stand to be one-upped by his baby brother, he takes
the fantasy football season very, very seriously -- and that includes
keeping track of every game, and every player. With this nifty gadget,
he can do still do that and not sabotage our Sundays in the process.
It's totally portable, battery-powered and updated every 15 minutes via
satellite signal. A fantasy football lovers dream! ($99, by Missy)
The Strollometer is a nifty little award-winning wireless pedometer allows you to keep track of how far, how fast and how long you've strolled. It works by attaching a magnet (with adhesive backing) to the wheel of your stroller. A bendable sensor attached to the leg or fork above the wheel, reading every pass of the magnet as you move, sending data wirelessly to a console you attach to your stroller's handles. Scroll through a number of readouts by toggling a button, including: Speed (mph/kmh), Maximum speed, Average Speed, Trip distance, Trip time, Daily Mileage, Temperature (F/C), Clock Time. The Strollometer is available at Amazon.com, Target, and many other retailers. ($46, by Missy)
I actually requested (and received) this Battery Rack from Lillian Vernon
for a Mother's Day gift two years ago, and we have renamed it "Battery
Central" because it's such a crucial destination in our house. It
keeps all the battery sizes in one location--wall-mounted or in a
drawer--and has a built-in tester. Everything is in its place, and no
more hunting for the double-A's. Dad and the rest of the family will
swoon over this one. Wish they'd make a battery recycler. ($11.98 plus earn a rebate when you buy via EBates, by

I don't quite get it but men seem to like to
be able to open a bottle of beer wherever they are (how else do you
explain all of those bottle opener key chains or flip flops?). I would
normally laugh at a product like the Mophie Bevy
but it's such a multi-tasking item that actually seems useful! Made of
polycarbonated with a stainless steel insert, the Bevy is for owners of
an iPod Shuffle who hate getting knots in their headphones, keep their
keys close, and be able to pop open a brewsky at a second's notice.
Available at many retailers, including Apple stores. ($15)
Kids turn to Dad to change the batteries on every small
blinky-beepy-clickety-clack toy, and Mom should watch carefully to see
where Dad ultimately stores this Precision Screwdriver Set. If he doesn't have one, what are you waiting for? This should be an item on everyone's baby registry! ($15, by Reva)
Over $100
Is dad a tech junkie? Does he unload a million electronic devices upon
returning home and have chargers scattered all over your home? The Blue Lounge Sanctuary
provides just that for up to 12 devices plus has enough room for his
wallet, car keys and wedding ring. It's essentially a sleek looking
tray that hides a universal charger that is compatible
with over 1500 electronic devices plus a USB port
allowing hundreds more electronic devices. Dad can charge his cell
phone, PDA,
Blackberry, iPod, MP3 player, and bluetooth headset all at the same
time and relieve you of the frantic, "Have you seen my cell
phone/PDA/Blackberry/iPod/MP3 player/bluetooth headset?" as he goes to
work each day. ($129)
Lillian Vernon sells a much less expensive electronics charging station
but it's not as cool looking, nor can you dump keys, change, etc. onto
it. Put the his-and-hers Blackberries side by side for a romantic night
of
charging in a neat and contained unit that hides all the cord
clutter. There's room for an iPod, too. ($20 plus earn a rebate when you buy via EBates, by Reva)
If he's low-tech, a classy bowl like this one from Violet.com to deposit his change and keys will also make your life a little swankier. ($40)
If my gadget-addict husband could take his laptop running with him,
he'd probably exercise a lot more. Well, I found the next best thing:
the Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS enabled sports watch.
When you strap it on and head out for a run, it tracks your distance,
your time, the elevation of your route, and it can even track your
heart rate. Once you're home, it sends the info to your computer
(wirelessly!) and shows your course and compiles all the data so you
can chart your progress and try to beat your time the next day. As a
new dad, leading a healthier lifestyle is important to my guy, and this
will offer some great incentive. I know he's already been eyeing it, so
it'll be quite the cool surprise for his first Father's Day. ($350, by Jen)
Help him find his way back home easily with a GPS navigational device.
With so many GPS models on the market, shopping for one can be
head-scratching but let me simplify things for you. We recently bought
a Garmin nuvi 260 because getting lost in suburban New Jersey was
getting old fast. It's been good because it's helped us find our way
back but that's been it. I'm kicking myself now for not going for a
TomTom because it has more innovative features that would make my life
a little easier.
In addition to spoken driving directions and street names (not all do!), maps of the US and Canada, the Help Me! emergency menu which gives you addresses and phone numbers of the closest hospitals, police, and fire stations, the lowest end model, the TomTom One 130S (above left), includes MapShare which allows you to instantly modify street names, directions, road speeds, road closings, and points of interest (like the new Target that just opened up near you) and benefit from others' verified corrections. (Optional features include updates on traffic - which requires the purchase of an add-on device and a yearly fee - and daily local gas prices so you can fill'er up for the best deal - which is free when you sync it with your computer.) The TomTom GO 730 also includes IQ routes which calculates the fastest route possible using actual speeds of travel rather than the posted speed limits (because you know everyone goes at least 5-10 miles faster on the highway), advanced lane guidance (which tells you when to move into the next lane so you don't miss your turnoff), accepts an SD memory card, and has longer battery life (5 hours instead of 3). It also features voice address input (instead of manually punching it in), hands-free calling via bluetooth (so you can use it like a speaker phone), and a bigger screen. The TomTom GO 930 includes all of that PLUS enhanced positioning technology for uninterrupted navigation in tunnels, Bluetooth remote, and FM transmitter (so you can play MP3s and directions over your car stereo). (One 130S $249 but currently $150 and free shipping at Amazon, GO 730 $399 but currently $388.26 at Amazon, GO $499)
I'm always being asked what camera we use to take such gorgeous photos
of Anya. Beyond the adorable model, a lot does have to do with the
equipment. A digital single-lens reflex (D-SLR) is always going to give
you a better sharper picture than those from a PHD (push here dummy,
what my high school photo teacher Mr. Tiffen called compact cameras)
due to the complexity of their lenses. We have a few cameras but the
best photos are from Josh's Nikon D70 D-SLR
which is no longer made, but a lower priced version is now available!
The D60 D-SLR, which is Nikon's smallest digital SLR, has many of the
same features at a lower price point. Features include 10.2 megapixel
resolution, automatically rotating 2.5-inch LCD screen which makes
taking vertical pictures easier, continuous shooting of up to 3 frames
per second (which will allow you to catch all of those cute things your
kid does), and has a bonus "stop-motion movie mode" which allows you to
take a lot of shots and then "stitch" them together to make a movie,
sort of like a flip book. The camera allows you to set your own
aperture and shutter speed but it also has an automatic mode. It also
has a pop-up flash, but for truly professional looking flash shots, you
should invest in a bounce flash. ($749, including the lens)
For travelers, portable DVD players, laptops, or iPods which allow for
solo movie watching helps long trips go a bit faster, but batteries run
out and those iPod screens are teeny and can give you a headache from
squinting. Enter Vuzix iWear AV920!
It may make you look a bit like Jordy Laforge from Star Trek
Enterprise, but who cares when you're watching a movie on a virtual 62"
big screen TV? Plug it into any personal media player (like a 5th
generation video iPod) and put the 2.9 ounce headset, use its speakers
or plug in your own earphones, and you're ready for five hours of video
watching! I love that you can use them with or without your
prescription glasses! They will be coming out with a cable for the
iPhone and iTouch soon. ($350)
If your husband drools over the Sharper Image
catalog like you devour the holiday Neiman Marcus look book, don't miss
the huge liquidation sale going on at the Sharper Image retail stores
as they prepare to close. That's right- everything must go!
Currently items are on sale for 20-40% off, with no returns or exchanges allowed.
