Update: Clay Aiken to be a father

Tags: Dads , Expecting , News , Quotes

ClayaikenUpdate June 3rd: TMZ is reporting that they are expecting a baby boy.

Update May 29th: A rep for David Foster has confirmed exclusively to People that "the story is true."  He added,

It is true Clay is the father. She was artificially inseminated by Clay. She's due in August.

Rumor originally posted 2 p.m.: TMZ is reporting this afternoon that Clay Aiken, the 29-year-old former American Idol runner-up, is going to be a father.  Clay's producer and best friend Jaymes Foster -- with whom he occasionally lives -- is reportedly pregnant with his child via artificial insemination.  Jaymes is the sister of famed music producer and composer David Foster, is said to be 50, and due in August.

If true, the baby will be the first for them both.

Umm..Come again?

Posted by: Destiny at May 29, 2008 2:12:40 PM

wow! Thats all I can say! I like Clay. I thought he should have won instead of Rueben and my grandmother adores Clay. I think he would make a great dad actually! Guess we'll see if this is true soon enough!!

Posted by: tink1217 at May 29, 2008 2:16:51 PM

um, ok...

Posted by: kaitlyn at May 29, 2008 2:20:50 PM

TMZ says that she is 50. They also say (which may be worth noting in the post) that Clay does intend to take "an active role in raising the child." I am curious if this rumor is true. TMZ seems to get it right most of the time, don't they?

Posted by: MB at May 29, 2008 2:23:41 PM

This is a very intriguing rumor ... can't wait to hear more.

Posted by: carla at somethingaboutbaby.com at May 29, 2008 2:43:39 PM

Unusual, and interesting!

Posted by: Diane at May 29, 2008 2:47:07 PM

WHAAAAAT?

Posted by: Kerry Ann at May 29, 2008 2:50:50 PM

Wha??

If he lives with her, why would she choose AI? Haha, I guess that acronym has two meanings for Clay now...

Posted by: rachael at May 29, 2008 3:02:15 PM

i thought clay was gay.......*thoroughly confused*

Posted by: ang at May 29, 2008 3:04:06 PM

Wait...If she's in her late 40s, it's very unlikely she could get pregnant through artificial insemination. Most women that age use egg donors, thus need IVF.

Posted by: kate at May 29, 2008 3:06:46 PM

she is 50??? She must have really GOOD eggs!!

Posted by: tink1217 at May 29, 2008 3:09:06 PM

Shocker much?

Every other site is reporting it also...I believe it's true. Is there a reason for the IVF treatment? I know it's an ubber personal question but alot of people assume it was IVF because of Clays preferences...

Congrats to them!

Posted by: Ericka at May 29, 2008 3:20:14 PM

Seriously, I do not know what to say other than ...Congrats!?!

Posted by: Courtney at May 29, 2008 3:20:25 PM

I doubt this is true.

Posted by: Jackie at May 29, 2008 3:36:21 PM

LOL

Posted by: sigh at May 29, 2008 4:17:29 PM

I, too, thought Clay was gay...but maybe he wants a biological child. But a 50-year-old undergoing artificial insemination seems a bit off, unless they actually mean there was a donor egg used and it was implanted and Jaymes (that name REALLY threw me off, lol) will be a surrogate, so to speak. Or am I just thoroughly confused? *scratches head*

Posted by: Melly at May 29, 2008 4:48:02 PM

Um...what?

Posted by: jasmine at May 29, 2008 5:10:37 PM

This is confirmed on people.com.

Posted by: Sasha at May 29, 2008 5:17:48 PM

uhhhhhhhh...are they dating or is he a gay friend who donated his swimmers? im so confused.

Posted by: liz at May 29, 2008 5:33:48 PM

This has to be the oddest pregnancy announcement ever.

Posted by: JR at May 29, 2008 5:40:54 PM

Wow...weird....wonder if this confirms the rumors about him being gay, since it was not done the old fashioned way, you know, having sex. ;)

Posted by: Becky at May 29, 2008 5:41:12 PM

At first I was speechless and like Kaitlyn...lol "Um ok" pretty much sums it up.
Congrats to them both....I think..

Posted by: Natalie S. at May 29, 2008 5:46:02 PM

LOL Rachael! AI indeed!!! I think it's cool and more power to them.

Posted by: Sasha at May 29, 2008 5:49:16 PM

This is definitely a unique announcement, but to me it does not matter how and why a child comes into the world, as long as they have parents who love them.
Regardless of why Clay and Jaymes chose to have a child together, they should be congratulated because clearly they intend to love this child very deeply.

Posted by: Sabrina at May 29, 2008 5:49:47 PM

Hmmm...really? And due in August? How did they keep it a secret for this long?

Posted by: Mimi at May 29, 2008 5:56:43 PM

What does his sexuality have to do with him having a baby? How do any of you know if he is gay or straight and honestly it does not matter. Why is it weird? If it was someone else
such remarks would not be written.

Posted by: ggg at May 29, 2008 6:01:53 PM

additional (and detailed) statement needed, please! I'm surprised they didn't explain more, instead leaving people to speculate.

Posted by: La Petite Belle at May 29, 2008 6:12:55 PM

I read it was artificial insemination, not IVF. Which means he donated sperm and its her own egg. That is surprising since she is 50!

Posted by: tink1217 at May 29, 2008 6:20:08 PM

ahhhh...ok.

Posted by: UggaMugga.com at May 29, 2008 7:20:34 PM

Wow, I wasn't even going to comment because I didn't believe for a second that any of this was true...wow. It is quite the story and way for a baby to come into the world but obviously it was planned :) I wish them all the best and hope that this baby will have a great upbringing. CBB please keep us updated, because I am still VERY confused on this situation!

Posted by: Shelby at May 29, 2008 7:38:45 PM

This is kind of weird. I mean, are they a couple or is he just being a good friend and donating his sperm for her to have a baby?

Posted by: Aura at May 29, 2008 7:47:33 PM

I think this definitely gives creedence to the "Clay is gay" rumors.

I'm happy for both parties.

I also read that Willie Garson is adopting a child.

Posted by: Chrystie Delancey at May 29, 2008 7:47:58 PM

Jaymes Foster doesn't look like she's in her 50's...more like her early 40's. She looks quite young and healthy. Ruid.com has a photo of her and Clay....with another woman. She's the brunette

Posted by: Ericka at May 29, 2008 7:54:24 PM

Wow. Just...wow. Congratulations.

Posted by: terri at May 29, 2008 8:01:13 PM

*shurg* it's not weird to me. good for them... in terms of her age, most women in my family, for example, didn't even START menopause until their mid-50s. a little odd, but it does happen.

Posted by: dee at May 29, 2008 8:05:53 PM

wow. (but well said Sabrina)

Posted by: brannon at May 29, 2008 8:09:49 PM

I think it is probably that he is gay and decided that it would be a way for him to get to experience fatherhood. Lots of gay men or lesbians choose to parent in this way. I say more power to them!

Posted by: Shawna at May 29, 2008 8:30:02 PM

What the ... Well it could be true, if she used a donor egg, that would all make sense. Well good luck to them if it is.

Posted by: Nita at May 29, 2008 8:35:37 PM

Congratulations to them. But is she really carrying at the age of 50? That seems just, odd and dangerous for the Mom. But hey, whatever floats their boat.

It is just odd that a gestational carrier was not used instead.

Congrats.

Posted by: jennifer at May 29, 2008 8:39:53 PM

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This is weird and odd and I NEVER SAW IT COMING! Who did?

I'm very confused about their relationship. I mean, it's great that she's pregnant and is having a baby. Any child is a gift.

I still find it weird. :)

Posted by: Stephany at May 29, 2008 8:45:42 PM

Clay, if you wanted a child, why not adopt? Well..anyways, if this is what you want, I'm happy for you. Best of luck.

Posted by: Heather at May 29, 2008 8:47:08 PM

...i'm speechless.
this should leave no question to the whole clay is gay thing. it's very will and grace.

Posted by: Carrie at May 29, 2008 9:05:43 PM

It's none of our business who has artificial insemination, what their age is, whether they're gay or straight or what they want to do to the child after it's born. I repeat, it's none of our business. This is a personal choice.

Posted by: chloe at May 29, 2008 9:06:17 PM

This is the oddest celeb pregnancy announcement to me. I wonder if Clay is just a sperm donor or will actually be a dad to this child. Very interesting indeed.

Posted by: Heather at May 29, 2008 9:22:36 PM

I'm going to make a leap here and say that they both wanted a child, didn't feel they were going to have one by others means, are close to each other and care about each other so figured why not. I would also assume they plan to both raise their child as they seem to be very good friends by the "best friend" "sometimes live together" comment. Congrats and good luck to them both.

Posted by: kris at May 29, 2008 9:35:59 PM

Wow! While I wasn't expecting this, I am very happy for Clay and Jaymes. Clay seems like such a sweet, caring person....I'm sure he'll be a great father. While the situation may be a bit unconventional, the important thing is that this baby was obviously wanted and planned, so I am it sure it will be much loved. Congratuations to the parents to be.

Posted by: CTBmom at May 29, 2008 9:36:21 PM

Wow. Welcome to 2008. This is definitely a unique situation. You know, actually it could turn out for the best. The baby was planned, will probably be well cared for, and will definitely have music in its genes. If Clay and Jaymes are truly best friends they will hopefully be great co-parents.

Posted by: chris at May 29, 2008 9:40:50 PM

Wow, I didn't expect to hear this at all. It kind of came out of left field but hey. Congrats to them both even if they didn't conceive the traditional way. Hopefully the child will be healthy and happy. :)

Posted by: Anny at May 29, 2008 9:44:20 PM

An odd announcement... but Congratulations!

Will Clay be playing an active role or is he just the sperm donor?

Posted by: Colleen at May 29, 2008 9:48:33 PM

The whole sperm donor thing - well, can't say I saw it coming or wasn't confused by it, but the whole, he lives with her part time, and he's going to be a father figure? That's the part that is just odd to me.

To each his own, but I can't help but think of the child and wonder what kind of backlash he/she might receive. Kids can be cruel to each other, unfortunately.

Posted by: Heather at May 29, 2008 10:04:48 PM

everyone is having babies

Posted by: wow at May 29, 2008 10:46:48 PM

can i just say what the? I'm sorry I just find that just out of the blue and weird I think I'm just like every 1 else stunned!

Posted by: passml122 at May 29, 2008 10:52:11 PM

Heather: according to TMZ, Clay plans to be a father to the child and actively involved in his/her life.

Posted by: MB at May 29, 2008 11:22:53 PM

Good for them, here is the only thing I don't get and would love to hear a comment on: Clay vehemently denies being gay (although, I mean, come on, right?) to avoid upsetting some of his fans and then chooses this path? Isn't that kind of strange? I can imagine anyone turned off by a Broadway (!) performer being gay might also be weirded out by the 50 year old producer being pregnant with his baby outside of a relationship, right?

I think it is a courageous move though... and hope that everyone kind of respects their choice in doing so

Posted by: Nicole at May 29, 2008 11:39:24 PM

I feel the same way passml122...
of course I'm happy for them but it doesn't make me any less shocked...

Posted by: jasmine at May 30, 2008 12:11:08 AM

Now I'm not sure if I believe it because it's her brother's rep confirming it; why would her brother go public with this before the actual parties involved did? hmmmm...

Posted by: Sasha at May 30, 2008 12:28:28 AM

I am a big Clay aiken fan, so this in many ways was shocking. But, it seems real to me. Clay is a great man that loves children, and I believe that he wanted to start a family sooner, than later. Praise God for blessing two people to fulfill their dreams. In earlier reports, it stated that she wanted children, but didn't when she was married, and he would make a great dad. I do hope that if the part about him being a hands on dad are true, that everyone gives him the time, space, and mostly their support, so he can be the best dad he could be. Congrads to the both of them.

Posted by: nancy at May 30, 2008 12:59:06 AM

well....ok....Congratulation!!
I'm so confused and surprised

Posted by: ma74 at May 30, 2008 2:02:31 AM

This should have been titled "...and in News that is Stranger than Fiction."

Posted by: SewCalMom at May 30, 2008 2:51:18 AM

why is everyone so focused on his sexuality and the sperm donor part?? Clay seems like a very down to earth, sweet and simple kind of man. I think he will make an excellent father. Maybe she decided she wasn't getting any younger and there is her best friend and he is a guy and why not??? Who cares about the intimate details anyway??? I was just surprised she is supposedly 50!!

Posted by: tink1217 at May 30, 2008 6:30:22 AM

Clay has never said that he was gay. It has always been rumours. He grew up a regular, but nerdy, North Carolina Christian boy. Never any signs of "gayness". Jaymes is a woman, and a beautiful one at that who looks much younger than her years. From what I've heard, IVF was not used. She is still pre-menopausal. It happens.

Posted by: Daze at May 30, 2008 7:40:51 AM

Jeez, I guess I didn't realize CBB readers were so conservative. What's the big deal? I think it's great, congratulations to both of them.

Posted by: Alice at May 30, 2008 10:29:30 AM

I am so happy for them both! They solved a problem in a smart way. Both obviously wanted a child and in my opinion, made a practical decision. More power to them!

Posted by: Daisy Kay at May 30, 2008 11:40:36 AM

I don't think it has that much to do with being conservative (at least not in my case) because I am anything but, it's just more so that this seems sooo random!

Posted by: jasmine at May 30, 2008 12:12:03 PM

Don't know either personally so have no idea on how they will be as parents or not. But so I didn't about myself lol

Just wish them well !

And honestly, kids will only be as cruel as we parents allow them to be.

Time to learn something about love :o)

Posted by: kiki at May 30, 2008 1:41:16 PM

:-O

This is kind of in the same realm of Lisa Marie Presely marrying Michael Jackson.

I'm going to assume (though we should never do that, right?!?!) that they are both gay and want a child and this situation works for them.

Congrats to them and I wish her a healthy pregnancy & delivery!

Posted by: Christine at May 30, 2008 2:08:22 PM

I'm having trouble understanding why everyone thinks that Clay must be gay because they used artificial insemination. Does that mean that you sleep with all of your close friends of the opposite sex??

I have no real opinion on whether he is gay or not and honestly don't care. I just don't see why he now has to be gay since he didn't sleep with his friend to get her pregnant. As others have said, it's possible to make a rational decision to have a child even if you're not involved romatically, especially if one of you is running out of time.

Posted by: Hope at May 30, 2008 2:24:47 PM

Every interview where Clay has been asked the "gay" question he has said things like, I don't feel I need to speak about my sexuality to anyone. I am not going to talk about that right now. Come on! Those are clear signs that your in the closet and not ready to come out. If your not gay you would deny it in a heartbeat! And if I were a fan of Clay I think I'd be more upset that he can't just accept who he is and be proud of his sexuality. I don't think he'd lose any fans over it and I am certain that most of his fans are not blind to it already. Granted he has never formally said anything so nobody really can claim that he is. But this story is just wierd. But if it's what they BOTH wanted then I say in this day in age, do whatever floats your boat. Just as long as nobody gets hurt!

Posted by: J.M. at May 30, 2008 4:30:43 PM

Wow congrats

Posted by: brooke at May 30, 2008 9:49:49 PM

I think I would have much more respect for him - if he is gay - if he would just finally admit it and quit dodging the issue. I trust the baby will be loved and cherished regardless of the way he/she is coming into the world. But what a weird set of circumstances ...

Posted by: Sheri at May 31, 2008 8:41:08 AM

Clay has mentioned in many interviews in the past that he is NOT gay. I can understand that if a man comes across as effimenite, people are going to just assume they're gay. I was married to a man with some effiminite qualities but guarantee he's 100% hetero. The difference with Clay is now he's so sick of hearing the question over and over again, he's simply not going to answer it. He's already said he's straight and if no one wants to believe it then it's their problem, let alone none of their business.
Whether this is true or not, I wish them and the baby well. Also, who can say that they didn't try getting pregnant the natural way and that artificial insemination was the only way? Or maybe they BOTH wanted a baby now and agreed to do it together without having a romantic relationhip. Why does AI automatically determine HIS orientation?!? He's a great, talented man of character. I wish him happiness.

Posted by: Windgoddess at Jun 2, 2008 2:35:20 PM

Clay reminds me of a younger Michael Jackson, and unfortunately, that's not a good thing. I just hope he's happy and that the child is loved and treated like a normal little boy or girl.

Posted by: kim at Jun 3, 2008 11:16:09 AM

He has shown his ability to work with children. And his love for children. It appears that he will make a great father.

Congratulations!

Posted by: jennifer at Jun 3, 2008 11:19:23 AM

Can someone please clarify the definition of "artificial insemination"? I thought it meant insertion of sperm without actual intercourse, i.e. with a turkey baster. I didn't think it necessarily meant "IVF" which is very expensive and complicated. David Foster says "she was artificially inseminated by Clay." Does this mean Clay provided the swimmers? Or that he operated the baster?

Posted by: Susan at Jun 3, 2008 2:30:39 PM

Clay doesn't have to say if he's gay or not. This is his own business...why does he need to go scream what his sexual orientation is from the top of the roof? And Jaymes doesn't have one foot in the grave...just because she's in her late 40s doesn't mean the only way she could pregnant is by using an egg donor. Amazing the stories people come up with. Congrats to both of them. Wish them nothing but the best!!

Posted by: Jay at Jun 3, 2008 2:37:14 PM

I guess I'm just a little confused as to why the statement had to mention it was "artificial inseminaton" almost as a disclaimer..yeah she's pregnant..But he's didn't sleep with her! sort of thing.

Why not just simply state they're having a child together?

Posted by: Delilah at Jun 3, 2008 3:56:10 PM

AI is when a man's sperm is collected and put inside a woman's womb in hopes that they will fertilize at least one of her eggs.

IVF is where a man's sperm is collected and a female's eggs are collected and are "met together" in a petri dish, then the fertliized eggs are implanted back into the female womb.

Posted by: Ashley at Jun 3, 2008 5:00:24 PM

I personally would'nt want to be pregnant in premenopausal age, nor have a preschooler/early grade schooler while going through menopause, Lord help me..lol but to each their own.

Maybe with AI they were able to take some measures to make sure the egg was fertilized? Like, perhaps the dr and her were making sure she was inseminated at just the right time, who knows? Other than that, it's sort of an odd way of conceptions if IVF isn't needed, but whatever. It's just sort of sad that she'll be 70 when the child is only in college, if she lives that long.

My grandma is healthy at 76 with some minor health issues, but she's a GREAT grandma. My son is almost 18 and she's had a relationship with him and his younger siblings from day one. I can't imagine not being healthy and young enough to help with grandchildren--and if I'm blessed enough-- great grandchildren like my grandparents have. At 25, the average age of the first time mom (non-celebrity mom) this mom will be 75!
